How to Transform Your Home into the Festive Spirit Both Sustainably and Budget Friendly Words by Terri Humphrey, Russell & Rose Home

The festive season is not always friendly to the wallet or environment however, when looking to transform the home this season, there are great sustainable and budget-friendly home decor options that allow you to express your creativity while minimizing your ecological footprint. Terri Humphrey, Founder of home decor brand, Russell & Rose Home, shares her expert tips on how to breathe festive spirit into your home without compromising your wallet or the planet.

Upcycle

We always have decorations left from the year before that are not in the best shape but with a little tender loving care, you can give them a new lease on life. Unleash your inner artist and get creative with eco-friendly paints and embellishments to fix them up. You can even get the kids involved and make it into a fun family activity. This not only reduces waste but gives a personal touch to your decor.

Go back to nature

Thinking of the perfect festive tablescape can be as simple as inviting the outdoors and nature into your tablescapes by adding natural elements such as pine cones, branches, sea shells, or even re-purposing last year’s Christmas baubles with a fresh coat of artist paint to suit your decor theme. These can be layered as a centerpiece or used for personalized place settings or name tags.

This year, I’ve decided to use a live Christmas tree table top plant to add freshness and repurposing velvet ribbon to form simple bows to add to the branches. Place in a grand millennial flower pot from a local online market place and voila, we have a Christmas tree that’s not only eco friendly and low maintenance for the home and the environment, but extremely cost effective. This is also the perfect option for those who live in smaller spaces!

Thrifting is best

Thrifting is definitely a hidden treasure for me as you can find some unique pieces on a budget. These finds not only inject personality into your space but also contribute to a circular economy. Win win!

Textiles are key

Textiles are something I adore working with and am a huge advocate for sustainably made soft furnishings. Organic textiles refresh your space so when choosing, it’s best to opt for cotton, hemp, linen, or bamboo fabrics for cushions, table runners and place settings. These can be thrifted or handcrafted textiles which also make for budget-friendly and eco-conscious choices, adding warmth and comfort to your home. As with the Russell & Rose Home “Hope Christmas Collection,” we have used 100% linen which is embroidered with pink Christmas themed phrases on napkins and coasters to add a simple and sustainable statement to the table.

By embracing sustainable and budget-friendly home decor ideas, you are not only cultivating a unique and personalized living space but also contributing to a greener, more eco-conscious lifestyle. Small changes can make a big impact, and as you embark on this journey of transformation, remember that a beautiful home can be achieved without compromising your values or your budget.
